There are currently more than 1.2 million people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States, with more than 56,000 new infections annually. The understanding and management of HIV disease among patients in unique populations—such as the aging person with HIV, the HIV/HCV coinfected patient, the young man of color who has sex with men, and the patient who presents with advanced disease—are continually evolving. In this continuing medical education activity, distinguished faculty presenters will provide program participants with case studies demonstrating the clinical application of the most recent data and guidelines for the differentiation, evaluation, and identification of the best antiretroviral regimens for the aging patient with HIV, the patient with HIV/HCV coinfection, and patients presenting with advanced HIV disease. This activity will also provide program participants with the most recent data and guidelines for identifying barriers to prevention of HIV infection among young men of color who have sex with men and will suggest strategies to minimize biased self-reporting of sexual behaviors in this population in order to limit late diagnosis and delayed treatment.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians who care for patients with HIV, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses.

Upon completion of the activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Explain the importance of diagnosing HIV in patients in unique populations
  • Specify how aging and HIV infection increase a patient’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease
  • Explain the importance of screening all HIV-infected patients for HCV coinfection
  • Describe the goals of HCV therapy in patients coinfected with the HIV virus
  • Outline the safety and efficacy profiles of available therapies
  • Identify the risk factors and barriers to prevention, testing, and treatment of HIV infection among young men of color who have sex with men
  • Outline effective treatment strategies for patients with advanced HIV disease
